Membership

By current statute there are four categories of companionship in the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States: Hereditary, Junior, Associate, and Honorary.

Hereditary: Direct male descendants of the age of 18 years or more of a commissioned officer in volunteer or regular forces—Army, Navy, or Marines—who served during the War of the Rebellion; or male descendants of a sibling—brother or sister—of any such officer; or (new in 2022) male descendants of a first cousin of any such officer.

Junior: Direct male descendants under age 18 years of an eligible officer or descendants of a sibling or first cousin of an eligible officer. Junior Companions cannot vote or hold office.

Associate: Male persons of the age 18 years or more who are not known to be eligible for Hereditary membership, and who subscribe to the preamble, principles and objects of the Order and who have demonstrated a serious interest in the War of the Rebellion, and whose membership will advance the objects of the Order. As the number of associate companions is limited by statute, admission to the order as an associate companion is by invitation only.

Honorary: Bestowed, on an exceptional basis, by the Commandery-in-Chief under the provisions of the Constitution and By-Laws.

If you are interested in membership, please contact the Rhode Island Commandery at info@rimollus.org.

Application forms are available from the website of the Commandery-in-Chief for Hereditary (long-form or short-form) Companions. Junior companions are often eligible for the short form as near relatives of current companions.
